At Alzheimer & Dementia Care, LLC, we like to keep our clients, friends and family informed on the recent studies and research of spices, foods, vitamins and minerals that may have a positive effect on those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s & Dementia.

A few spices have been shown to have positive effects on Alzheimer’s & Dementia patients.  One such spice is Turmeric!  Turmeric is a yellow powdered spice which comes from a plant related to the ginger family.  It is used mainly in Asian and Indian dishes.  This spice has a compound in it called cur-cumin that has been used for centuries to treat different ailments.

Recent studies show that consuming as little as a teaspoon a month of Turmeric can have some positive health benefits. Anti-inflammatory benefits of Turmeric can help cognitive function, blood sugar balance and kidney function.  One study involved three Alzheimer’s patients who had anxiety, irritability and agitation.  After being treated with less than a gram of Turmeric a day, for three months, these patients’ symptoms improved greatly.  The study concluded that Turmeric when combined with routine therapy, increased the quality of life and improved performance of everyday living.  Studies done in India have shown that there is a lower occurrence of Alzheimer’s and better cognitive function where Turmeric is a regular component of people’s diets.

Turmeric has many healthy nutrients in it as well such as Vitamin C, Vitamin K, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, niacin and protein.  You have nothing to lose by adding more Turmeric to your diet!

So just how do you get Turmeric in your diet if you’re not into Asian and Indian curry dishes?  Add some Turmeric to your smoothie in the morning.  Sprinkle some on your meats before grilling or baking.  Turmeric can be used in scrambled eggs, quiches, roasted vegetables, soups, etc.  Turmeric is a wonderful spice to add to many fish dishes as well.  It provides a wonderful marinade simply by using Turmeric, lemon juice, olive oil, and garlic.  You can find so many recipes with Turmeric online.
